    GENERAL

At least seven people have died as a result of the Quakers Hill Nursing Home fire in Sydney's northwest.

Three residents died in the blaze and the fourth person died while undergoing treatment for their injuries in hospital.

The fourth death was confirmed by authorities late on Friday.

The person was one of 32 people earlier taken to a number of Sydney hospitals suffering various injuries.

Firefighters described the blaze as their worst nightmare.

Bewildered, bedridden elderly residents were dragged the burning nursing home shortly after 5am (AEDT).

As the news broke across a sleeping Sydney, their families woke to their own nightmare as they tried to find out whether their loved ones had survived.

Despite acts of heroism from rescuers, including two young police officers who were the first on the scene, three people were confirmed dead by the time the blaze had been extinguished.

The team at Survival Solutions has been deeply saddened by this tragic event, and extend our sincere condolences to the families and victims, whilst also recognisng and praising the amazing courage and dedication from all emergency services personal that worked through this tragic event.

Although it is early days, it highlights the need for operational fire safety systems and well practiced emergency management procedures.

It is likely that the building design and operation of fire safety systems helped provide safe fire and smoke separation, allowing emergency services and staff the ability to move residents out of immediate danger before complete evacuation.

Although it is tragic to lose a life in any circumstance, the fact still remains that many residents were evacuated to safety and this may indicate all of the designed fire safety measures and emergency management procedures worked as required.

We will continue to evaluate this tragedy as information becomes available and report on the findings.
